Witness one of Asia’s most spectacular cultural celebrations during your stay in Kandy. The Esala Perahera is a ten-night religious procession honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, transforming the city into a breathtaking display of devotion, tradition, and pageantry.
Held annually in July or August during the month of Esala, this centuries-old festival brings together dancers, drummers, fire performers, and magnificently adorned elephants in a moving tribute that has endured for over 1,500 years.
The Esala Perahera originates from two ancient traditions — a ritual invoking blessings for rainfall and the Dalada Perahera established after the Sacred Tooth Relic arrived in Sri Lanka in the 4th century CE.
The festival unfolds in stages:
| Kap Situveema | The ceremonial commencement ritual |
| Kumbal Perahera (5 nights) | Traditional and more intimate processions |
| Randoli Perahera (5 nights) | The most elaborate and regal nights |
| Diya Kepeema | A sacred water-cutting ceremony marking the conclusion |
Each night builds in scale and splendour, culminating on the full-moon Poya day.
As evening falls, the streets of Kandy come alive. The procession begins with the crack of whips and the deep resonance of traditional drums. Conch shells echo through the city as torchbearers illuminate the night. At the heart of the parade walks the majestic Maligawa Tusker, carrying a sacred replica of the Tooth Relic in a glittering casket.
Surrounding the tusker:
| Traditional Kandyan dancers |
| Fire dancers and acrobats |
| Flag bearers and ceremonial drummers |
| Over a hundred caparisoned elephants |
| Cannon fire marking sacred intervals |
Five distinct processions honour the guardian deities — Natha, Vishnu, Katharagama, and Pattini — each accompanied by unique ritual performances, including the vibrant Kavadi dance.
The experience is immersive, powerful, and deeply spiritual.
The Esala Perahera takes place annually in July or August. Exact dates vary based on the lunar calendar. For travellers, the final five nights (Randoli Perahera) are the most elaborate and visually spectacular.
