Today, 12th August, the world comes together to celebrate and honour the incredible elephants that share our planet. World Elephant Day is backed by 100+ wildlife organisations worldwide. Millions of people have shown their love and commitment to protecting these gentle giants, proving that together, we can make a difference.
Sri Lanka is home to the Sri Lankan elephant “Elephas maximus maximus”, a unique subspecies of the Asian elephant found only in Sri Lanka. These gentle giants are an essential part of our culture, biodiversity, and ecosystems. They help shape forests, disperse seeds, and have inspired various Sri Lankan art, traditions, and folklore for centuries.
On this day, let’s commit to ensuring future generations can witness these majestic animals roaming freely in our jungles and grasslands.
✅ Keep Your Distance – At least 50 metres from wild elephants.
✅ Stay Quiet – Loud noises can stress or startle them.
✅ Never Feed Them – Human food can harm their health and encourage dangerous behaviour.
✅ Let Them Pass – Always give them the right of way.
✅ Stay Inside Your Vehicle – If on safari, remain inside and follow the guide’s instructions.
